The Hunterdon Scoop / Tools

Check a contractor's license.

Every home improvement contractor working in New Jersey must be registered with the state. Type the number from their contract or truck (it starts with 13VH), or just type their name, and this asks the state registry directly. If they won't give you the number, that is your answer.

NJ Registry Name or number

This tool queries the state's own verification system and shows you what it says. If the lookup is down, run it manually at that link. We don't store what you search.

What the result means

  1. Active means the registration and required insurance are current with the state. It proves identity and paperwork, not skill. It's the floor.
  2. No record on a number means walk away. Registration is mandatory, and working without it is the single loudest red flag there is.
  3. Name search matches partial names across both state registries (businesses and individual license holders). The registered name sometimes differs from the name on the truck; that alone is not a problem.
  4. The companies we'd call first are already checked and dated: who we'd hire.
